Horror properties coming to television seems to be the in-vogue thing to do at the moment. Not only has Chucky successfully made the move to the small screen, but we have television continuations of Friday the 13th, Halloween, and Alien on the way.
So, with that in mind, we’re delighted to bring you an update on a project that’s been silent for almost a year.
Last Halloween it was announced that MGM, alongside Amazon Studios and Amblin Television, would be producing a television adaption of 1982’s Poltergeist. The supernatural classic was directed by Tobe Hooper and followed the Freeling family, who’s daughter Carol-Anne has been abducted by sinister forces inside their home.
Starring Jobeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, and Heather O’Rourke, and produced by Steven Spielberg, Poltergeist was a massive box-office success. Spawning two sequels and a remake, the series had been dormant since 2015, until this surprising announcement.
Now, after a considerable period of waiting, the project has taken a huge leap forward, as two prolific producers have come aboard as showrunners.
Best known for her work on Fear the Walking Dead and Once Upon a Time, Kalinda Vasquez will take her first stab at helming a show with Poltergeist. Joining Vasquez will be Robbie Thompson, who has previously served as a producer on CW’s Supernatural, and recently undertook showrunner duties for its spin-off The Winchesters.
Whilst plot details remain unknown, this is a considerable leap forward for the project. Poltergeist last broached television with Poltergeist: The Legacy, an investigative drama that was unrelated to the film series’ mythology. Will this show take a similar route? We’ll let you know as soon as we have any further details.
