Can you believe it’s been almost 10 years since 1997’s Anaconda crossed over with Lake Placid? Yes, in a flurry of straight-to-DVD madness we had the ultimate reptilian face-off.
However, after that, both franchises fell silent, but for Anaconda, that’s all about to change.
Reliable sources tell us that an A-list reboot is in the works, with Jack Black and Paul Rudd in negotiations to star. Tom Gormican, the man behind the Nicolas Cage vehicle The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, is set to write and direct for Columbia Pictures.
From the limited information we have, we’re told that the reboot will follow many of the same beats as the 1997 original. According to a brief press release on the project:
“The new story involves a group of friends facing mid-life crises, who are remaking their favorite movie from their youth. They head to the rainforest, only to find themselves in the fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes, and violent criminals.”
As you’ll recall, 1997’s Anaconda also featured a filmmaking crew, heading into the rainforest to document the titular snake. Sporting its own impressive cast, the movie starred Jon Voight, Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Owen Wilson, and Eric Stoltz. Although panned by critics, Anaconda performed moderately at the box-office. This would see the property become a franchise, heading to home video for three sequels and the previously mention Lake Placid crossover. Interestingly, there was a Chinese remake of Anaconda just recently. However, it remains unavailable elsewhere as of this writing.
What remains unclear is if this reboot will be a “meta sequel,” and if the favourite movie the group of friends are attempting to remake is Anaconda… We must admit, that would tickle us quite a bit. We’ll be on the lookout for further updates and will let you know how this one develops.
