In light of the coronavirus pandemic, we didn’t expect Nia DaCosta’s Candyman to release on June 12th as originally slated. Now, Universal has confirmed that the film’s release has been pushed to September 25th, 2020.
Set in the present day, a decade after the infamous housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini Green were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris), move into a luxury loft in the neighbourhood, which has been gentrified beyond recognition. After a chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer (Colman Domingo), Anthony begins to explore the macabre history of Candyman, the deadly urban legend that once terrorized the residents of the projects.
But while Anthony hopes his research will help to reignite his stalling career, it may unwittingly open a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity, unleashes a terrifying new wave of violence, and puts that artist on a crash course with destiny…
Described as a “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 classic of the same name, Candyman was produced and
co-written by Jordan Peele (Get Out). Win Rosenfield also worked on the screenplay.
